10 Tips from the Pros for Better Snowplowing

snow drive

During the winter it’s vital to keep driveways
and access routes free from snow

It’s never too late to learn and a helpful tip is always welcome. We asked the plow pros for some of their insider knowledge to make snowplowing easier.

Setting Up for Snowplowing

  • Even if your plow came with SAE fastenings use metric nuts and bolts when installing plow mounts, push tubes and plow blades. ATVs and UTVs are metric machines so keeping all the fastenings the same saves you having to switch between wrench sets.
  • Adjust your front tire pressures and front suspension to compensate for the additional weight of the plow and to stop ‘porpoising’.
  • Make sure your plow lift system raises the blade high enough to clear any obstacles – high curbs, landscaping features, etc.

While You’re Plowing

  • Clear a wide path early on. Don’t be left with nowhere to pile snow by the end of winter.
  • Plow frequently – even during snowstorms – and don’t let snow build up too much.
  • Plow downhill whenever possible and don’t ram into hard-packed piles of snow – it’ll be easier on your ATV's or UTV’s drivetrain.
  • Raise the blade slightly and leave an inch of snow cover over grass to protect it.
  • Never immediately plow right next to property. Start by plowing a couple of feet from walls, then make subsequent passes closer in.
  • Always use tire chains. The more traction you have the easier and faster you’ll plow.

    • Always inspect the plow for wear and/or damage. This will give you ample warning if something needs replacing and you’ll be ready to plow the next time a snowstorm hits.
